The superpower of writing

Updated: Sep 22

What are the first thoughts that come to your mind when you read this headline?

If you're like most entrepreneurs, the following thought has probably crossed your mind:

“Writing? Really? How can writing help me get more sales? To get it, I can do the following things:

But none of these have to do anything with writing."

These are all valid points, but let's start getting into this powerful, hugely underrated idea:

Your writing.

Good writing can be the decisive factor that distinguishes a successful company from a failed one.

It is the best way to get more attention, more clients and it’s the best way to grow your business.

Good writing is basically a superpower.

However, there is one big problem with this:

Most writing is absolutely horrible. You are usually more tempted to sleep than to read an article in a newspaper.

There are many reasons why this is the case:

  • Bad teachings in school

  • Writing is not speaking

  • etc.

Most people never actively write on a regular basis and have therefore not picked up the skill to write a good article.

But we can argue about the ‘why’ all day long without getting anywhere. So let's focus on the ‘how’.

Better said: ‘How to fix your writing’

The first step is always to make it easy for the reader to say: ‘Yes, I am going to read that.’

But how do you do that?

Let’s assume you can write the most interesting articles in the whole world and it gets printed in your local newspaper.

When you first open the newspaper, all you see are a couple of articles stacked on top of other articles. Everything is very tightly packed together.

Your first instinct is to ask yourself: “There is no way I am going to read through all that.”

Now compare it to this article you are reading right now.

Much simpler and easier to read, isn’t it?

Short paragraphs and easy sentences make it much easier for your brain to say “This looks interesting. Let’s go through this.”

But this does not mean that you should write everything in a way that a toddler could understand.

Be aware of how you format your writing.

And just another extra tip on the side:

This is the exact same thing for every piece of content you make.

Doesn’t matter if you write a blog article, a short or long-form video script, or even a script for any kind of audio content.

It is essential to hook your reader at the start.

Until next time.

Simon
